What Autumn Has to Say

Why do you work for Body Gears?

In order to successfully work with human beings, you have to treat each individual as a human being, not simply as a diagnosis or body part. At Body Gears, we have the privilege of working one-on-one with our patients for a whole forty minutes and get to know the whole person. This is a rare opportunity and a great treat!

What aspect of movement do you find the most fascinating?

I’m fascinated by physical therapy’s complex marriage of science and art. On one hand, staying up to date with current research is critical for good outcomes. On the other hand, there’s still so much we have yet to discover about the human body. It’s never a dull moment.

Tell me about your PT school experience.

I earned my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. LIU has a strong focus on orthopedics and manual therapy with excellent professors bringing different perspectives to the table. One of my favorite parts of the program was cadaver lab. Though revolting to some, it opened my eyes to the fact that the human body is one functional unit, not neat, separate muscles like you see in the pictures. PT school was certainly challenging, but upon graduation, I was awarded University Honors and an award for Clinical Excellence.

What certification are you currently working towards?

I am scheduled to sit for my board certification as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in Spring 2019.

How do you stay active?

I’m a retired competitive rugby player (10+ years, including playing in the Women’s Premier League, the highest level in the USA), so I miss intense physical competition. After hanging up my rugby cleats, I quickly fell in love with CrossFit. If I’m not working out at the CrossFit box, you’ll find me playing in the great outdoors – hiking, biking, and kayaking.

What Patients Have to Say About Autumn

“The Oak Park Body Gears team is excellent. I worked primarily with Autumn to correct severe knee and foot pain resulting from some very intense hiking along the Appalachian Trail. Going in, I figured my trail days were numbered for sure… and I’m happy to report that Autumn’s PT abilities (aka magic hands) and strengthening exercises have me walking quite well again and I’m already planning my next excursion!”

What Patients Have to Say About Autumn

“Autumn is knowledgeable and provided information regarding my therapy so that I understood the benefits. I am able to lift myself up out of a chair and walk up and down stairs, without holding on to an armrest or handrail, after just a few sessions.”

What Patients Have to Say About Autumn

“Autumn listens carefully and utilizes both my information and her skills and knowledge to develop the course of treatment. I appreciate the treatment is offered by a therapist and not just assistants. She sets realistic goals. She is reassuring but also realistic in setting goals. The “hands-on” technique works well for me.”

What Patients Have to Say About Autumn

“I went to see Autumn upon recommendation from a teammate after I struggled to recover from a shoulder injury. She really took the time to explain why I was still having pain, and while working on my shoulder, helped me understand what I could do to stay active without causing further damage. She was incredibly patient as she helped me work on my posture and at the end of our time together my shoulder was stronger and pain-free!”

What Patients Have to Say About Autumn

“I went to PT because of a persistent hamstring problem. I was discouraged because two previous attempts at other PT businesses did not resolve the problem. I met with Autumn at Body Gears in Oak Park. She was focused, very competent, personable, and determined to help me return to my various activities(running, tennis, biking). Autumn found the basis for my hamstring pain and limitations. Through my PT sessions and doing my exercises at home, I have completed PT and returned to my active lifestyle. Thanks, EC”
