Getting Ready for the CrossFit Open!

What is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is a time of year where all CrossFit athletes can take part in an open competition against other athletes around the world. This year, the Open will take place over 5 weeks from February 23 to March 27. Dave Castro, co-founder of CrossFit, will announce each week’s workout on Thursday night. Athletes have until that following Monday to complete the workout and submit their score.

What Kinds of Workouts are in The Open?

Every year, athletes are challenged in the three pillars of CrossFit: constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement. Each workout will contain a variety of movements based on a mixture of gymnastics, weightlifting and agility. We often see complex weightlifting movements such as Olympic lifts (clean and jerk, snatch), and others such as deadlifts and thrusters. Likely gymnastics movements in this year’s workouts will be handstand push-ups, pull-ups, and muscle-ups. Other movements we expect to see are burpees, box jumps and rowing.

What Happens after The Open?

The top athletes from each region move on to the Regional competition, where they will compete for a spot to compete in the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Games which take place this year in Madison, WI.
