Helping a Patient Get Back to What She Loved: Backpacking

After making significant improvements following chronic lower extremity injury, our patient wanted to practice something that she loved: backpacking. With trips lasting anywhere 5-7 days, one has to carry a sleeping bag, food, cook ware, tarps and tools that can combine up to 30 percent of one’s body weight. In order to simulate the environment of a backpacking trip, we weighted the patient’s packand practiced stepping onto an unstable surface, much like stepping on a loose rock or over a branch. This helps to strengthen the core, hip, knee, and ankle muscles in order to stabilize the patient to prevent her from falling over.

This is one example of functional exercise that we perform at Body Gears Physical Therapy. We will take the sport, activity, or hobby that you love and incorporate it into your treatment plan!
