Sports Injuries

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a serious athlete, sports injuries are a fact of life. From twisted ankles and aching backs to breaks and tears that call for immediate medical attention, and those pains that just aren’t going away, physical therapy is here to help!

Common Sports Injuries

  • Repetitive stress conditions: Arthritis and tendonitis/tendinopathy often stem from sports moves like swinging a racket or throwing a ball. Doing the same thing over and over again with poor mechanics will irritate your joints and muscles. Vulnerable areas include your shoulders, elbows, hips, ankles, and knees.
  • Torn tendons and ligaments: Big jumps, twists, and stretches can result in tissues tears and ruptures, especially in your knees, shoulders, and groin. Surgery followed by physical therapy is often only necessary for complete ruptures with partial tears frequently managed with physical therapy alone.
  • Back strain: Sometimes that soreness in your lower back just won’t go away. If that’s the case, we’ll work with you to reactivate your core muscles and retrain your back motions.
  • Fractures: After being immobilized by a cast or boot, the surrounding muscles will be weaker and the joints stiffer. Physical therapy not only ensures you’re loading that injured bone properly for the first time but helps you regain your strength and flexibility.
  • Concussions: These brain injuries not detectable on any scans can be sustained in any sport. See our concussions page for more specific information.

Prevention

Athletes know that the best way to avoid injury or re-injury is to build up strength and flexibility and develop good form. Working out at the gym is great, but our physical therapists will guide you through specific exercises that work on the muscle activation, joint mobility, and motor control you need for your specific sport. We’ll also talk you through strategies you can implement before and during your training and competition.
